Co-morbid
Conditions

We are not one dimensional. Often our conditions come along with other mental health issues, often as a result of trying to navigate life with our unique brain wiring.

These may include:

Anxiety

OCD

Depression

Bi-polar disorder

Eating disorders

Substance abuse

It is important to speak to professionals about how to deal with your co-morbid conditions. Often getting help for your specific neurodiversity, and creating an environment that allows you to thrive, can alleviate other symptoms.

Let's take depression and ADHD.

Having ADHD makes you 4 times more likely to suffer from depression. But that's not all that surprising. All the struggles that ADHD symptoms can bring, like troubles with school, relationships, work, executive functions, and the demands of everyday life can lead people with the condition to feel not so good about themselves, making them prone to low self-esteem and negative self-concept. Especially if you haven't gotten proper support, or diagnosis.

But the rule is: "Work first on the condition that causes the greater impairment" says Lenard Adler, M.D., director of the adult ADHD program at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City.  “Problems raised by ADHD are real, but depression can be life-threatening.”

We've collected some resources here that might help. Feel free to send us some more for this list, for anything we've missed.
